Amid independent reports from the key G2E Expo in Las Vegas this week that momentum appears to be building for the legalisation of US online gambling, the Las Vegas Sun newspaper carried an interesting interview over the weekend.

The owner of the Klondike Sunset, a Western-themed land casino at the southern end of the Strip, appears to be unequivocally against legalisation, and not just for competitive reasons – he is concerned that the currently small percentage of problem gamblers could grow if gambling becomes instantly available in homes 24/7.

John Woodrum (72) has been in the business since 1961, and told the newspaper that internet gambling was a different proposition entirely to players travelling to a land casino to have a flutter.

Playtech reports strong 3rd quarter results

Playtech PLC published its third quarter and year to date figures this week, turning in a strong performance through a traditionally quiet period of the year.

Operation and Financial highlights for the period ending 30 September 2010 included:

  • Gross income for the quarter up 30% to €41.3 million (Q3/09: €31.9 million)
  • Total revenues up 17% to €32.5 million (Q3/09: €27.7 million)
  • For the nine months to 30 September 2010, gross income up 31% to €129.2 million (2009: €98.8 million) and total revenues up 25% to €105.4 million (2009: €84.4 million)
  • Excluding impact of France closure: gross income vs Q2/10 was up 1%, total revenues down 2%
  • On absolute basis, gross income down 7%, total revenues 12% below Q2/10

Looking across the products of the group, casino revenues are up 17% to €21.7 million (Q3/09: €18.5 million) and down 13% on Q2/10.

E-cash processor ePassporte announces closure

After seven years of operations, the e-cash processor ePassporte is closing shop “due to a lack of revenue and circumstances beyond our control.” A company statement advises that, effective immediately, the call centre, ePassporte’s sales and marketing team and risk management staff will no longer be available.

“A small group will remain to organize wallet requests and help disburse funds,” the statement continues. “On the ePassporte website, in the near future, wallet holders will be provided further information on what is needed to obtain your funds.

Tipp24 reinvests in German lottery business

Industry observers are speculating that Tipp24.com’s return to the German lottery brokerage market is rooted in indications that the market may be liberalised in the future following anti-monopolistic rulings by the European Court of Justice recently.

The Hamburg-based online gaming operator announced this week that it is preparing to re-enter the German lottery brokerage market after selling the remainder of its outstanding shares for over €9 million.
